Ponte Vittorio Emanuele II – Vittorio’s Bridge

This bridge dedicated to King Vittorio Emanuele II was designed by Ennio De Rossi in 1886.
But the opening was only 25 years later, June 6, 1911, just in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Unification of Italy.

The bridge connects the center (Corso Vittorio Emanuele II) with the Vatican and the Borgo district.

On cells of the central arch are four marble statues symbolizing “the unification of Italy,” “freedom” “oppression won” and “loyalty to the statute”.

The bridge is built in masonry, has three circular and  lowered arches, is long 108.75 metres and  width 20.

The other bridge in the photo you see through the arches is ponte Sant’Angelo.
