Faro – Lighthouse

Among the oddities of Rome, there is the Lighthouse of the Gianicolo. The lighthouse was built in 1911 on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the creation of the Kingdom of Italy, thanks to funds donated by the Italians emigrated to Argentina.

The Lighthouse (20 m high) is the work of Manfredo Manfredi (1859 – 1927), architect famous, among other things, for the Tomb of Vittorio Emanuele II at the Pantheon and the Monument to Independence of San Paulo, Brazil.

The balcony of the Lighthouse looks at the Regina Coeli prison, which is very close as the crow flies, and was used until recently by the families of detainees to communicate with them.

It was a practice banned but tolerated by law enforcement, so long as the posts concern only urgent and important news.

P.S. See you every monday for the Monday Night Shot!
