| Il Muro Torto (che significa Murto Storto) è un muro antico dell’età repubblicana di Roma, che è stato poi inglobato nelle mura Aureliane. Si trova alle spalle del Pincio e al confine con villa Borghese. Nella Roma papalina qui venivano sepolti i suicidi, i ladri, i vagabondi e le prostitute. Ed è proprio questa usanza che ha generato una delle più macabre leggende di Roma. Il numero dei suicidi divenne così elevato che le autorità decisero di mettere le reti (nella foto) per impedire agli sprovveduti di buttarsi di sotto. |
The Muro Torto (meaning Crooked Wall) is an ancient wall of the Republican era of Rome, which was later incorporated in the Aurelian Walls. It is located behind the Pincio and bordering Villa Borghese. Here, during the Papal era of Rome, were buried the suicides, thieves, vagrants and prostitutes. It is this practice that has generated one of the most macabre tales of Rome. The number of suicides was so high that the authorities decided to put the net (see photo) to prevent the unwary to plunge below. |
