La Vela di Calatrava – The Sail of Calatrava

That huge “sail” in the center of the photo was designed by Santiago Calatrava, a Spanish architect of international renown.

It had to be one of the boasts of Rome, the heart of the city of sport ..
But today is just a skeleton, a monumental work remained unfinished.

The project dates back to 2003, and the initial funding in 2005 was 190 million euro in view of the World Swimming Championships in 2009.
In 2007 work began. The City of Sport would cost 400 million  and have stadium by 8000 seats. In July 2008, it is clear that the work would not be ready in time and the races are held at the Foro Italico.

The project is modified and the 400 million rise to 600.

Today there are just skeletons of steel and reinforced concrete and the failure of Rome’s candidacy for the Olympic Games of 2020 has blasted any other public funding.

Now there is talk of a European tender for the financing of the work (still lacking 400 million euros) and the subsequent management of the plant …
It seems that many companies have already expressed interest in the fate of Calatrava sail. There is talk of the swiss Nec, the english AEG Facilities (the company that manages the Millennium Dome in London), and a Chinese group.

Meanwhile the municipality is spending about 10 million euros “to secure” the system …
