Ponte Regina Margherita – Queen Margherita Bridge

Il ponte è dedicato alla regina Margherita di Savoia, prima regina d’Italia, ed è stato costruito tra il 1886 e il 1891, su progetto dall’architetto Angelo Vescovali.

Il ponte è in asse con via Cola di Rienzo, la principale arteria del quartiere Prati, e costituisce un collegamento diretto con Piazza del Popolo.

In passato il ponte è stato spesso teatro di suicidi. Chi voleva farla finita con la vita si gettava dai parapetti per finire nei gorghi del Tevere.
La leggenda vuole che il primo suicida sia stato lo stesso capomastro che aveva dato il proprio apporto alla costruzione del ponte.

Ponte regina Margherita ha tre arcate in muratura rivestite di travertino ed è lungo 103 m..

The bridge is dedicated to Queen Margherita of Savoy, first Queen of Italy, and was built between 1886 and 1891 and designed by architect Angelo Vescovali.

The bridge is in axis with via Cola di Rienzo, the main thoroughfare of the Prati district, and is a direct link with Piazza del Popolo.

In the past the bridge was frequently the scene of suicides. Who wanted to do away with life flew by parapets to finish in eddies of the Tiber.

Legend has it that the first suicide was the foreman who had given his contribution to the construction of the bridge.

Queen Margherita bridge has three arches covered with travertine stone and is 103 m long.
