Piazza della Repubblica is one of the most important and famous squares in Rome, even though the Romans call it still with its old name: Piazza Esedra.

In the Centre of the square, there is the huge and wonderful Fontana delle Naiaidi.

The fountain consists of three concentric circular basins and four tanks positioned to cross.
In each of the basins is a naked naiad (aquatic nymphs) with an animal characteristic of its environment.
The naiad of the oceans is riding a wild horse.
The naiad of groundwater is lying on the back of a dragon.
The naiad of lakes embrace a Swan.
The naiade of rivers is lying on a monster serpent river.

The group of 4 Naiads was carved in 1901 by Mario Rutelli.

In the picture you can see a Glaucus (patron deity of the sea ports) with a dolphin from which gushes a high stream of water.

The Glaucus, symbolizing man’s dominion over natural forces, was added to the center of the fountain in 1912 by the same sculptor (Mario Rutelli).
