In Rome there is a foolproof system to adjust the clock.
Just wait that the cannon shots.
Is no joke.

Since 1847, everyday at noon the cannon of the Gianicolo shoots a shot.
In neighborhoods overlooking the hill, such as Trastevere, the roar of shot can be heard very well despite the noise of the city.

The blank firing cannon was introduced by Pius IX in 1847, to give a standard time to the bells of the churches of Rome.
The cannon at the time was at Castel Sant’Angelo.
In 1903 it was moved to Monte Mario, but only for a few months.
The cannon came, then, in its current position to the Gianicolo (practically under the statue of Garibaldi).

The custom was stopped only during the war.
The shot of noon was reintroduced on 21 April 1959, on the occasion of 2712º anniversary of the founding of Rome.

At weekends, the terrace of Gianicolo is full of parents or grandparents with children who came to see “the cannon that shoots!” …
